Biography

Andrew E. Krause was sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of New York on October 8, 2020.

From October 2012 until his appointment, Judge Krause served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Immediately prior to his appointment, Judge Krause was the Senior Litigation Counsel and the Professional Responsibility Officer in the Civil Division; he also previously served as the Civil Division’s E-Discovery Coordinator. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Judge Krause had a wide-ranging practice in which he represented the United States, its agencies, and its employees in all phases of defensive and affirmative civil litigation. Among other recognition for his work, Judge Krause received the Department of Justice’s John Marshall Award for Outstanding Legal Achievement for Participation in Litigation in 2018.

Prior to joining the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Judge Krause was an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell, LLP, where he was a five-time recipient of the Legal Aid Society’s Pro Bono Publico award for outstanding pro bono service. Judge Krause also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Stephen C. Robinson, United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. Before law school, Judge Krause was selected for the New York City Urban Fellows Program, during which time he worked in the Office of the Mayor.

Judge Krause received his J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2005, and received his B.A. cum laude from Yale University in 2000, where he was awarded the Roosevelt L. Thompson Prize at Commencement for commitment to and capacity for public service.
