Spiritual Support

The biopsychosocial-spiritual model explains that there is a complex interplay between these dimensions of life and how a person with serious illness may respond to their care plan. Therefore, a patient-centered, holistic approach to assessment should include exploration of spiritual and/or religious distress. A variety of assessment tools are available to clinicians, including the HOPE spiritual assessment, the FICA spiritual assessment and the SPIRIT assessment tool. Consult the references below for further information. Referral to an interdisciplinary palliative care team should be considered for those with complex medical, psychosocial, and spiritual concerns.
