What is the PhD in Nursing?

A post-master’s level program in which students will earn a research degree.

What will the PhD prepare me to do?

The PhD prepares graduates for careers in academic leadership, healthcare policy, patient care administration, global health leadership and the strategic improvement of healthcare quality and access.

Is the program online?

No.

Can I attend the program part-time?

No. The program full time with 3 three credit courses each academic semester. No courses are offered in the summer or during winter break.

How is the program set up?

The program is offered using the cohort model. Each cohort remains together for the course work time. All students move through the course work part of the curriculum together.

How long is the PhD program?

The program is designed to be completed within 4 to 5 years. The course work is 2 ½ years and the time to complete the dissertation is usually 1 ½ to 2 ½ years.

What if I have not taken all of the required prerequisite courses?

A: You may still apply to the program but must complete the missing prerequisites prior to the beginning of your first semester.

How many credits is the PhD program?

You will need to complete 45 credits to finish the degree.

Can I transfer credits from another institution for the program?

For questions regarding transferring credits, please contact the director of the program.

When and where are the classes held?

All classes will be held at the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Pleasantville Campus on Fridays from 9:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. You can drive as there is plenty of parking or Metro North goes to Pleasantville where a Pace van meets the train and drives to the campus.

What are the graduation requirements?

To successfully complete a minimum of 45 credits, relevant course work, pass a comprehensive exam, research and develop a Proposal Defense of the dissertation, and present the final Defense.

What is the qualifying exam?


The qualifying exam at the end of the first year of course work focuses on the state of the science of the students’ research area of interest. The student is guided through the process by a faculty mentor.

What is the Proposal Defense?


The Proposal Defense is a two part process consisting of a written research proposal and an oral presentation in defense of the proposal.

Can I work while earning my PhD?

Yes. Most students work during their PhD studies however given the intensity of the program; however, it is recommended that priorities and the scope of the work be carefully considered before embarking on full time studies.
