Students in the JD program at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ have the unique opportunity to structure their studies to pursue an Advanced Certificate in Environmental Law. We also offer graduate programs and joint degrees that provide students with an even deeper understanding of the field, preparing them with the knowledge and skill to be effective environmental advocates. Students are free to choose from more than 40 courses that cover a wide range of national and international environmental, energy, conservation, and land use topics.

Degrees and Certificates

  • The Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) in Environmental Law offered by Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ's Elisabeth Haub School of Law is a graduate research degree intended to prepare legal scholars to research, publish and teach in the field of environmental law, whether in the United States or elsewhere in the world.

  • Haub Law’s LLM in environmental law prepares lawyers to address the scientific, economic and political forces that shape the environment and to work for outcomes that protect our natural surroundings and promote smart and sustainable development. The program also offers optional specializations in Global Environmental Law, Land Use and Sustainable Development Law, and Energy and Climate Change Law.

  • JD candidates at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ may structure their courses of study to attain the Advanced Certificate in Environmental Law as part of their law degrees. Authorized by the New York State Department of Education and offered to both practicing attorneys and current students, this certificate signifies proficiency in the fundamentals of environmental law and provides a basic grounding for practice in the field.

  • Through our dual and joint degree programs, a student may earn a JD while working on a second advanced degree. By enrolling in a joint degree program, a full-time student may complete both degrees within four years, instead of the five years of study required when each degree is pursued separately. Part-time students can complete a joint degree program in as few as six years.

Environmental Law Courses

*Required for successful completion of the Certificate in Environmental Law.

**Candidates may only apply 3 credits from each environmental clinic, externship, and practicum towards the Certificate in Environmental Law.

Note: Students are able to earn both the Certificate in Environmental Law and the Certificate in International Law by choosing electives that count towards both, including International Environmental Law, the United Nations Environmental Diplomacy Practicum, and others.
